DESIGN BUILD

REI Flagship

Denver, Colorado

Photos

This design build project is the renovation of a historic structure into a Flagship retail outlet for REI. REI is a national retailer specializing in the sale of clothing, accessories, and equipment for camping, hiking, climbing, biking, canoeing, and skiing.

The building, originally built in 1901 and added on to in 1910, was the power plant for the Denver Tramway Company. Both AC and DC power was generated from this facility with a complex network of coal handling equipment, boilers, condensing engines, and generators. Later, when the Tramway closed, and up until now, the building was better known as the Forney Museum which displayed many forms of transportation of earlier years.

The new store will house the center piece of the store, the climbing wall or Pinnacle, retail area and displays, offices, rental area, repair shop, customer service, conference room, and a café. The inside will be unique by the use of openness and multilevel architecture. The entry will be created by the use of special lighting and a water feature.

The renovation of this facility includes a new electrical service that will accommodate this 80,000 square foot structure as well as a 40,000 square foot parking garage and site work. A 150 KW generator will also be installed to maintain special needs of the store.

Lighting will consist of three basic elements. One is for ambient or general lighting, another will be for the store displays, and a third will be to highlight the climbing wall (The Pinnacle) that is the center piece of the store. Due to the height of the entire facility, special consideration to support systems and methods needed to be used to maintain cost-effective installation. Other systems include, power, mechanical connections, fire alarm, and provisions for tele/data, security, CCTV, sound, and POS.
