RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT FACILITY

Lucent – Denver Atlas

Westminster, Colorado

Description of Work:

The Lucent Denver Atlas project is a five structure complex to be used as office and laboratory facility for research and development. This innovative R & D facility consists of 531,000 square feet, which includes two research buildings, a central conference and meeting center, site and remote central plants.

The structures are Buildings A, B, C, D and E with buildings A and E being parking structures. The parking structures are not included in Ludvik’s contract; however, Ludvik’s contract does include the 31,000 gross square foot Central Plant for the entire complex which is in the basement of Building E. Buildings B and D, which contain approximately 212,000 gross square feet each, are mirror image architectural layouts and contain the labs and lab working offices for the division of Lucent that will occupy the facility. Buildings B and D are placed on each side of Building C, with the parking structures Buildings A and E located on the outside of B and D. Building C, which is approximately 76,000 gross square feet, is the flagship building and will house the customer interface with the Lucent developing products. It will contain the demonstration areas, auditorium, customer conference rooms and open areas that contain a botanical area. Buildings A and E are precast concrete. Buildings B, C and D are structural steel placed on caissons with aluminum frame attached to support the architectural glass exterior finish. The facility is located on Lucent property, which is adjacent to and north of their existing facility at 800 West 120th Avenue.

Throughout this design-assist project, the design services of Ludvik’s staff engineering department will be utilized. The principal power distribution for Buildings B, C, D, and portions of Building E consists of a double loop medium voltage primary distribution to each building from two PSCO provided switch locations. The secondary power distribution for each building is comprised of a 4000 Amp double-ended main distribution center, transformers, feeders, busduct risers, emergency power and miscellaneous panelboards. A grounding riser is included through each electrical room and each IDF room. A 1500 KVA emergency generator located in Building E, along with site lighting for each building, will be provided. Building C includes a dimming system for all display and meeting rooms. Buildings B, C and D will have a state-of-the-art audio/visual system. In addition to the electrical systems described above, Ludvik Electric is installing a lightning protection system for Buildings B, C, and D.

The project notice to proceed was received on March 12, 1999 and will be completed approximately February 12, 2001.
