Kirtland Underground Munitions Storage Complex

Albuquerque, NM

The Underground Munitions Storage Complex is located in a remote area at Kirtland Air Force Base, requiring complete site excavation and development. Touted as the single largest repository of nuclear weapons in the Unites States; providing storage, shipping and maintenance for the US Air Force and US Navy.

The facility includes:
360,000sq. ft. main Munitions Storage Building located completely below grade level
25,000sq. ft. Squadron Operations Building
2,000sq. ft. Utility Building

The underground Storage Building includes:
Entry and access ramps
Personnel entry control area
Loading dock with bridge crane
Offices and training areas
2 maintenance bays with bridge cranes and storage bays
All electrical systems are provided in rigid metal raceways

An extensive computer based security system protects the entire complex. Entry and exit of the buildings consist of vehicle barriers, roll-up gates, bullet proof bi-fold doors, and hydraulic blast doors.
All areas are monitored and controlled with card access electric locking equipment, CCTV cameras with automatic switching, in addition to software based interlocks.
Personnel entry areas include X-Ray equipment, metal detectors, turnstiles, and entrapment booths with hand geometry equipment.
